How to use
The Kanji tab has words usually written with kanji, and the Kana tab has words usually written in kana alone. Pick a view and a level; tap a card to flip it. Decks has ready-made decks: lessons (each level in batches of up to 25 to study in order: grouped by topic, then by word type, with the most common words first in each group), topics (colors, food, family and more) and word types (verbs, adjectives, nouns and more). On the Kanji tab, turn on Radicals to sort the level's words by the radical of their first kanji, with a deck for each radical. Make your own decks (flash cards) and sets (stroke order) in Deck Builder; this browser remembers them. Export saves every deck and set from both tabs as one CSV, and Import (from either tab) adds the ones you don't already have. Print works on whatever is on screen, and so does Export in Flash Card and Stroke Order; Deck Builder's Export saves every deck and set. Save link puts every deck and set in a link and QR code to open on another device, which is how to move them off a game console (its browser can't save files). Tango can be installed as an app from your browser's menu (on an iPhone or iPad: Share, then Add to Home Screen) and then works offline too.
Controls: click or tap a card to flip it, and swipe a flash card sideways for the next one. Keyboard: Tab moves between buttons, and the arrow keys move through card grids, deck lists, menus and the Print window; on flash cards Space flips, ← → change cards, Home and End go to the first and last, and F opens full screen. Game controller: the D-pad or left stick moves, A presses, B goes back, LB and RB change cards, LT and RT change pages, Y opens full screen, and the right stick scrolls.

Words, readings, meanings and word types: this page uses the JMdict dictionary file (version 2026-09-27) and the KANJIDIC2 file (version 2026-09-27). These files are the property of the Electronic Dictionary Research and Development Group, and are used in conformance with the Group's licence. JLPT levels (unofficial; this page isn't affiliated with the JLPT): Jonathan Waller's JLPT lists (CC BY), as matched to JMdict in yomitan-jlpt-vocab. Which tab a word is on comes from JMdict's note that a word is usually written in kana, how common its kanji spelling is, and whether that spelling uses only the readings in the 2010 jōyō table (from Wikipedia's List of jōyō kanji, CC BY-SA 4.0).
Furigana: matched to each kanji with KANJIDIC2's readings and the special readings list of JmdictFurigana (MIT). Radicals: KANJIDIC2's classical radical of a word's first kanji; radical names from Kanjium (CC BY-SA 4.0). Topics: Japanese WordNet (© 2009 NICT) and Princeton WordNet 3.0, matched to each card's meanings and checked by hand for N5 and N4; the most common words come first by JMdict's frequency markings. Stroke order: KanjiVG by Ulrich Apel (CC BY-SA 3.0). Lettering: Klee One by Fontworks (SIL Open Font License).
